Day 9: Rushed = Eggs

Pretty standard day with nothing to report, except to say that I now fully recognise the ease and convenience of incorporating eggs into my diet (though I still cannot pretend they grow on trees, Mike!).

..does beg the question however, how many eggs are too many?   See below.

Breakfast

  • Black filter coffee
  • 1 Challenge-compliant muffin

Lunch

Went to the supermarket on my lunch to pick up some bits.  Had a preprepared list, so no messing about.  Wasn't tempted by anything I shouldn't have (this hasn't been an issue for me generally anyway).

Whilst in Tesco at the checkout, I couldn't help noticing this sign:

"Real, honest, tasty food:
We don't use any artificial flavours or hydrogenated fats in any of our products"

Now, I'm not saying they're lying, of course...
.....although if I had the time I would be interested to do the research and find out, empiracally, if this is true. (I am cynical, can you tell..?)

But it got me thinking: What is "real food"?
Personally, I've found that my views are generally aligned with the paleo-approach of local, organic, unprocessed etc.  Making meals from scratch, from fresh, natural (identifiable!) ingredients..
But to most people, I think it means something totally different.
Perhaps just "not ready meals" = real food?
I know its different for different people, but that's a pretty (depressingly) low threshold, if true.

Perhaps this is part of the wider problem (re: nutrition + health)?

Just like how (a lot of) people no longer consider any conceptual link between the animal on the farm and the meat on their plate, maybe people have lost the sense and understanding of where any of their food comes from...
And maybe that's why they don't care...?

I am of course generalising.  But to talk about the average person kind of requires generalisation.

But where is the line (between real food and not real food)?
What about foods that necessarily require processing? e.g. bacon
Why is whey generally acceptable, for example, but Quorn is not?  [this being separate from the specific soy issue]

And what about the (apparently valid) argument that cavemen didn't cook... (and our bodies may not be evolved to cope with cooked foods as well as raw)??
so ummm will you be enjoying that steak "super bleu"?  And what about your chicken??

Anyway...

My supermarket items became:
  • Scrambled eggs with sea salt and lots of black pepper
  • Salad: shredded beetrood, mixed leaves (lettuce, spinach, chard), with 'Omega seed mix' sprinkle (pumpkin, sunflower, sesame, linseed, golden linseed), lemon juice, seasoning
  • 2 raw carrots dipped in homemade guac (see previous)
  • 1 apple

All tasty, but a bizarre combo, I know.  Not entirely confident with what to match eggs with.  As in, I'm never convinced what they "go" with.. Perhaps that's mainly just my residual reservations about eggs coming into play.  But lunch is just a functional occasion at work anyway - get them bloody eggs down me!

Tea

Knew I was going to be short for time this evening as off out for a gig, but (unsurprisingly) public transport cut down my food prep time even further..  This resulted in: MORE EGGS!
  •  4 egg omelette, with sundried tomatoes,  courgette, garlic, seasoning
  • large portion spinach and asparagus with lemon juice, olive oil, seasoning
A weird/interesting thing happened with this.  Basically, I ate it super fast due to time constraints.
...And this meant that very shortly after, I felt hungry (despite the voluminous amount consumed!):

This is interesting for a number of reasons.  Not least because it indicates eating slower has benefits (allowing you to feel naturally full, for example).

I normally do eat slower.  James on the other hand always eats like its about to be taken off him (I do tell him its not!)..  And consequently I'm sure he eats more than he needs to at times.

Anyway, this phenomena resulted in a Challenge-compliant muffin on the way to the gig.

I happily enjoyed the gig on pints of soda water with fresh lime (having learnt my lesson on Sunday).. CHEAP!  (Just meant I needed to wee more!)
